Contemporary Asian Art from Global Perspectives

1:30 pm–5:30 pm

In conjunction with Asia Week San Francisco Bay Area and jointly sponsored by NanHai Art, Christie’s, and Asia Society Northern California, this two-part symposium features scholars, curators, artists, art critics, and Asian art specialists, distinguished in their own fields, coming together for an informative and interactive discussion on trends of contemporary Asian art from a global perspective.

Entitled “Inheritance and Transformation,” Panel One focuses on artists who are deeply rooted in their cultural and artistic inheritance, while revitalizing and enlarging their tradition with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. Devoted to examining artists giving voice to the varied and changing cultural landscape of identities, values, and beliefs, Panel Two, “The Changing Boundaries,” invites artist, curators, and art critic to examine and discuss how Asian artists see to reposition themselves in a global context.

On the occasion of 2017 Asia Week San Francisco Bay Area, NanHai Art is pleased to present four exhibitions, featuring works by five artists - Hou Beiren, Arnold Chang and Michael Cherney, Shen Chen, and Stella Zhang. Virtuosically manipulating a variety of media—ink and color on paper, calligraphy, photography, acrylic on canvas, and mixed media installation, these artists demonstrate different creative paths that either inherited, revitalized, and transformed the tradition through new modes of expression, or gave voices to the varied and changing cultural landscape of identities, values, and beliefs, thus seek to reposition themselves in the perspective of global art.
